OfSTED REVIEW

HIGHLIGHTS

The inspection was carried out by Mr. Philip Cole, Inspector number 2616 who is accredited through Ofsted by the British Government for the inspection of schools.

The School was established in 1968, originally as a primary school. It began taking secondary pupils in 1991 from Kindergarten to Sixth Form. The school is co-educational; pupils come from over 40 different countries.

The inspection judgement

Criterion
The school follows a recognized English system of education. In addition, the School should use the established English system of naming its Year Groups (Reception, Year 1, Year2, etc).

Judgement
Year Groups are named using the English system and pupils are of the correct age within each Year Group. The work of the school is based on the English National Curriculum, with appropriate adjustments to accommodate the requirements of the Ministry, to provide enrichment, for example by including a Modern Foreign Language and to make pupils’ learning more relevant to the local conditions.

This criterion is met in full.

Criterion
A prospectus is published and revised regularly. The following details should be provided

School philosophy and aims
· Fees (including uniform, book costs, etc)
· Basic curriculum
· Code of Conduct for students
· Transport Costs
· Class-size
· Extra-curricular Activities
· Calendar

Judgment
The school publishes an informative and attractive prospectus that is revised annually to ensure that it is up to date. Annexes, covering such aspects as fees, additional information on the curriculum and day-to-day information for parents and pupils supplement the prospectus. An easy to use website provides accurate and informative details to a worldwide audience.
Together these cover the eight items listed in the criterion very thoroughly and provide very helpful information to parents and their children.

Criterion
All staff, including ancillary workers, are appropriately qualified for their positions. All staff have written job description. The school publishes a staff handbook, which details general school procedures, conditions of employment, accommodation and workload. There is a clearly defined management structure within the School.

Judgement
Teaching staff all have appropriate and recognised qualifications. They are qualified for the subjects that they and for the age range of pupils with whom they work.
There is a clear and effective management structure, with leadership groups at different levels and individuals with well-defined responsibilities, so that it is clear to all where decisions on different aspects of the school’s life are made.

This criterion is met in full.

Criterion
There is a clearly defined admissions policy.

Judgement
The admissions policy of the school is set out clearly for parents in the prospectus. Standardized tests are used alongside interviews to ensure that pupils are likely to be able to benefit from the type of education provided by the school. Tests also identify pupils entering the school in the Foundation Stage or Key Stages 1 and 2 who need extra support in learning English as an additional language. Admission to the sixth form is based on performance in IGCSE examinations.

This criterion is met in full.

Criterion
There is written curriculum based, where appropriate, on the National Curriculum of England and Wales. The school also teaches Arabic, Islamic Studies and Social Studies as required by the Kuwait Ministry of Education.

Judgement
The curriculum is appropriately broad and well balanced. As described above in Criterion 1, the work of the school is based on the National curriculum, for England and Wales, with appropriate adjustments to accommodate the requirements of the Kuwait Ministry of Education. Care is taken to make pupils’ learning more relevant to the local conditions and there is good enrichments through the provision of French as modern foreign language and the wide range of extra-curricular clubs that are provided.

There is good provision made for teaching information and communications technology (ICT), which enhances pupils’ learning in this increasingly important curriculum area.

There are appropriate written policies for each subject. For Kindergarten these are based on the Early Learning Goals of the Foundation Curriculum, and for Key Stages 1. 2. 3 and 4 on the National Curriculum. Pupils’ learning is enhanced by educational visits and after school clubs. Membership of KFSAC provides the competitive forum to enhance sports provision and assist with the physical and social development of the pupils. The effectiveness of provision made for physical education is reflected in the success of the school’s teams in the KFSAC events.

A provision in the school goes well beyond the requirements of this criterion.

Criterion
The students’ work is regularly assessed and written reports are sent to parents at least twice annually. In addition there are regular opportunities for consultation between parents and teachers.

Judgement
The school has extensive and well-established procedure for assessing pupils’ work and reporting on their progress to parents. The school makes use of standardized testing and National Curriculum assessments to measure the progress that individuals make as they move through school.

Provision in the school goes well beyond the requirements of this criterion.

Criterion
The external examinations offered by the school are set and, where appropriate, are marked and moderated in Britain by recognized examination authorities. These examinations are appropriate to the ages of the pupils attending the school. Such examinations may include any or all of the following: End-of- Key Stage Tests, Common Entrance Examinations, School and University Entrance Examinations, IGCSEs, AS and A-Levels. Public examination results are available, in their entirety, for inspection by authorized persons.

Judegment
The school makes use of the Cambridge Examination Board for external examination at IGCSE, and Cambridge and Edexcel for AS and A2 levels. The papers for these examinations are taken by the pupils in properly supervised conditions, and the papers are submitted to the board for external marking. There are secure procedures for ensuring that the question papers are not seen before the examination and that completed scripts are not altered in any way. Comprehensive records are kept of examination results.

This criterion is met in full.

Criterion
The school has appropriate accommodation for delivering its planned curriculum.

Judgement
The purpose built accommodation opened in January 2005, ensures that the school has an excellent range of specialist teaching rooms. The high quality of the accommodation supports effective delivery of the school’s curriculum and leads to high achievement. Arrangements for security are excellent. The installation of CCTV monitors security inside and outside the premises. Access to the schools is carefully controlled by security guards to ensure pupils are safe.

This criterion is met in full and comfortably exceeds requirements.

Criterion
The school has appropriate resources for delivering its plan curriculum and an appropriation system to provide them.

Judgement
The school has a good level of resources to teach the curriculum across its full age range.

This criterion is fully met.

Overall Judgement
Overall, the English School Fahaheel comfortably meets all of the criteria. Its continuous commitment to achieve excellence has ensured that good progress has been made since the last inspection.
